HOME CARE AFTER CAT CASTRATION

The Operation
Castration, desexing, or neutering of a male cat involves the surgical removal of the testes through two small skin incisions. The scrotum remains intact. This procedure not only sterilises your cat but reduces undesirable male behaviour, most importantly spraying urine. It does not change his personality or energy levels.

On Arrival Home
Please keep your cat inside on the first night after surgery to keep the wound clean and to monitor your cat after his general anaesthetic. A clean towel, sheet or blanket makes a good bed. Anaesthesia interferes with the body's ability to regulate temperature, so ensure his environment is comfortably warm. Let him rest as much as he wants. Lift and carry him by supporting him under the chest. If other pets in the household want to play with the patient, it may be necessary to separate them for a couple of days.

Feeding
Offer your cat a light meal later in the evening, but he may not be hungry after his anaesthetic, in which case feed him as normal the next day.

The Wound
Check the wound daily. A small amount of swelling and discharge of pinkish fluid is normal. However, if there is excessive swelling or discharge, please contact us. If you are unsure whether the wound is normal or not, contact the hospital or bring your cat in for a check. If your cat licks the wound excessively, he will need an Elizabethan collar to prevent him reaching it. There are no sutures to remove.
