PRE-ANAESTHETIC BLOOD TESTS

Pre-anaesthetic blood tests are performed to improve anaesthetic safety. They measure liver and kidney enzymes, blood glucose, protein, and red and white blood cells, and therefore provide information regarding kidney and liver function. Since anaesthetic agents are metabolised in these organs, any problems represent a risk for general anaesthesia.

These blood profiles are recommended for any animal undergoing general anaesthesia, regardless of age, since even young, healthy animals may have an underlying condition. Some of these are congenital or inherited problems, some infectious, and early treatment of these conditions can make a real difference.

The blood test is usually performed on the morning of surgery, and involves sampling 2ml of blood. If any significant discrepancies are detected, you will be contacted to discuss the next recommended step. This may involve delaying the procedure, putting the animal on a drip during anaesthesia to support the circulatory system, or further investigation of the problem.
Pre-anaesthetic profiles are optional, and cost approximately
$75-00 (incl.GST).
